What We Do

Advancing Sustainable Highland Development

The Highland Research and Development Institute (Public Organization) (HRDI) is dedicated to improving the quality of life of highland communities while conserving natural resources for future generations.

Building upon the Royal Project Model, HRDI integrates research, innovation, community participation, and strategic partnerships to address the complex challenges facing Thailand's highlands. Through an evidence-based and people-centred approach, the Institute develops practical solutions that strengthen livelihoods, protect the environment, and promote sustainable development.

Our work spans four interconnected areas that together transform knowledge into meaningful and lasting impact.

Research and Development Program

Research is the foundation of HRDI's work.

By combining scientific research with local wisdom, HRDI develops knowledge, technologies, and innovations that respond to real-world challenges. Research findings are translated into practical applications that support sustainable agriculture, natural resource management, community development, and evidence-informed policy.

Sustainable Development of the Thai Highlands

HRDI promotes an integrated approach to sustainable development that balances economic opportunity, social well-being, and environmental conservation.

Working alongside highland communities and development partners, the Institute supports sustainable livelihoods, strengthens community resilience, conserves natural resources, and enhances climate resilience to create long-term benefits for both people and the environment.

Royal Park Rajapruek

Royal Park Rajapruek is a living centre for learning, research, conservation, and public engagement.

Established following the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 and further developed through the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2011, the park brings together nature, science, education, and culture to inspire sustainable living while supporting HRDI's mission of research, learning, and environmental stewardship.

Our Impact

The true measure of success is the positive and lasting change created for people, communities, and the environment.

Through research, innovation, partnerships, and community participation, HRDI contributes to improved livelihoods, resilient communities, sustainable agriculture, healthy ecosystems, and stronger collaboration at local, national, and international levels.

Working Together

Sustainable development is achieved through collaboration.

HRDI works with highland communities, government agencies, Local Administrative Organizations (LAOs), academic and research institutions, civil society organisations, the private sector, and international partners to develop practical solutions that respond to local needs while contributing to national and global sustainable development goals.

Together, we transform knowledge into action and create lasting impact for people and the environment.

Looking Ahead

As new environmental, social, and economic challenges continue to emerge, HRDI remains committed to advancing sustainable highland development through research, innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

By building upon the Royal Project Model and working in partnership with communities and stakeholders, we continue to create practical solutions that strengthen resilient communities, conserve natural resources, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
